Revitalization and expansion of an existing building, converting it into a three-storey structure.
The expansion was inspired by the removable filing systems found in the former Desjardins credit union’s basement. Removable archival systems can be moved and separated in multiple ways, providing access to various storage subspaces. Thus, like the modulation of this archival system, the facade of the expansion gives rise to residential subspaces.
The proposal to revitalize this building aimed to preserve the symmetry of both facades and to reconfigure the entrances so that the facade on Rosemont Boulevard was entirely symmetrical. The secondary entrance to the extension stands out, as does the existing building, due to the contrast created by its black granite cladding. The extension’s contrasting elements highlight the existing building, while the windows and varying levels throughout the project help us understand the uses found inside the building.
As natural stone was the predominant material in the existing building, continuity with the surrounding facades was achieved with natural stone frames, which give the current building a refined identity and reinforce its appearance of durability.
