A new building is taking shape on the Collège Montmorency campus. Distinctive, white, and sleek, it evokes the college's rapidly developing areas of activity: research and health.
The health and research learning center program required a locker room area in the basement. The main challenge, which became the guiding principle behind the concept, was to find a way to bring in as much light as possible in order to create a welcoming, safe, and functional space different from a simple basement.
A staircase that is both indoor and outdoor allows for the creation of a central space, open on all floors down to the basement, providing maximum natural light. In addition, a completely glass-enclosed opening in the center of the building increases the amount of light inside. This space, around which the classrooms and laboratories are arranged, combines functionality and elegance.
Outside, a monolithic materiality distinguishes the volumes and their function. The black central space, equally distinct and refined, houses the common areas, creating a contrast with the white volume that houses the classrooms and laboratories.
