This residential complex was built in the Lachine neighborhood, in Montreal. Located near the Lachine Canal and the St. Lawrence River, it is considered part of the Lachine heritage sector, which inspired research into the neighborhood's history in order to design a project that reflects the identity and value of its location.
When looking at the history of Lachine, it is impossible to overlook the importance of trade and maritime commerce, which contributed to the area's growth. This was facilitated by ships and steamboats, whose size necessitated the widening of the canal to allow for their passage.
The significance of the Lachine Canal in the neighborhood's history guided the concept toward naval architecture and, more specifically, that of the Canadian Steamship Line (CSL), which played a crucial role in the evolution of transportation on the St. Lawrence River.
In order to integrate with the built environment, the project draws inspiration from the composition of the facades of neighboring workers' houses (village-style houses and/or suburban plexes). A regular grid is therefore drawn on the three facades of the building to organize the openings according to the housing units.
